A graduate in Physics and a meteorologist by trade, Filippo Thiery has worked since 2002 at the National Department for Civil Protection, where he is responsible for weather forecasting within the national warning system and supporting national and international emergency activities. He was previously engaged in climate research at ENEA, and has taught mathematics and physics in secondary schools. He is a part-time lecturer and trainer on topics linked to meteorology and atmospheric physics at various universities, institutes and research centres.
Since 2012 he has been the face of the weather section of Geo, Rai3’s science and environment programme; he presents a daily slot on the current weather and the forecast for Italy, and the consequences of weather events on land, environment and human activity.
In the past few years he has also specialised in the field of high-altitude meteorology at the world’s highest peaks, and provided weather forecasting support for the 2013, 2014 and 2015 winter expeditions of climber Daniele Nardi as he attempted the first winter ascent of the summit of Nanga Parbat.
