In 1984 Federico Maria Sardelli founded the Baroque orchestra Modo Antiquo, which performs concerts all over the world.
He is principal conductor of the Accademia Barocca di Santa Cecilia and the Turin Philharmonic Orchestra. He appears regularly as a guest conductor with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Staatskapelle Halle, the Kammerakademie Potsdam, the Moscow State Chamber Orchestra and many others. He has conducted in major concert halls all over Europe, including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow and the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome.
He records for Naïve, Deutsche Grammophon and Sony, and has recorded over forty discs to date as a conductor and soloist. He has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards (1997, 2000). Federico Maria Sardelli has been a leading light in the Vivaldi opera renaissance of the past few years, conducting world premiere performances and recordings of numerous previously unreleased works.
He is a member of the scientific committee of the Italian Antonio Vivaldi Institute at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice, for which he has published many essays and monographs. He is extremely prolific as a musician and musicologist, publishing works with Bärenreiter, Ricordi, SPES and the G. Cini Foundation.
In July 2007, Peter Ryom entrusted him with continuing the monumental task of cataloguing Antonio Vivaldi ‘s music, and since then Sardelli has been in charge of the Vivaldi Werkverzeichnis (RV).
For his “artistic eclecticism and evident cultural contribution”, the Tuscany Region awarded him its most prestigious medal, the Gonfalone d’Argento.
His novel L’affare Vivaldi (Sellerio) was published in 2015 to great acclaim, and was shortlisted for the Comisso Award.
Federico Maria Sardelli is also a painter, engraver and satirical writer, but that is another story.
